"I want to support the work of...the newest member of the extended librarian family, 'Librarians Without Borders', which are led by the fearless students of the University of Western Ontario." - Barbara Clubb An Evening About Libraries in Africa and South America The Canadian Association of Special Libraries and Information Services (CASLIS) Ottawa Chapter hosted an evening about libraries and library services in Africa and South America on April 26, 2007 in Ottawa. The evening began with the documentary "Remote Access: Distant Libraries of the World", a story about libraries in parts of Kenya and Peru. This was followed by a presentation by Rebecca Jansen, co-executive director of Librarians Without Borders. Summer 2006 Activities by the London Committee Our UWO student committee was busy over the summer months with a number of fundraisers, including a raffle for an autographed copy of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle and an "All You Can Eat, All You Can Sing" dinner and karaoke evening. The enthusiasm and energy of our volunteers was phenomenal! We were also invited to give a talk entitled "Libraries in Developing Countries" to graduate students in a first-term library science course. Thanks to the students for their interest, questions, and thoughtful discussion. 1st Year Anniversary LWB celebrated our one year anniversary in February of 2006. Members celebrated with us by sharing a delicious slice of cake. Thank you to all who came out and celebrated with us, and especially to all who have shown such wonderful support throughout our first year of development. Your support has been key to our success! A Book For Every ChildĀ® LWB joined with the Western student chapter of the Special Library Association in supporting London Public Library's annual A Book for Every ChildĀ® initiative. A Book for Every Child gathers donations of books for children and youth during the months of November and December; these books are then distributed through local service organizations. Last year over 6000 books were collected through the library and other businesses providing book-drops. This year we joined the effort by providing additional book drops in 9 different library and resource centres across campus. Through the generosity of students and staff we were able to collect over 170 books. We look forward to continuing to participate in this in the years ahead. Christmas Quilt Raffle Mary Boileau graciously donated three one-of-a-kind quilts for our Winter fundraiser. Thanks to everyone who bought a ticket in support of our work. Yuk Yuk's Comedy Night On October 27th, Yuk Yuk's Comedy Club in London welcomed Librarians Without Borders for an evening of comedy and fundraising. Our many supporters enjoyed the entertainment (including those jokes targeting librarians!). LWB Launch Party Our official launch in September 2005 was a great success with supporters, volunteers, and donors from the London community and beyond (including one dedicated member who flew in from Florida) joining us for speeches, raffles, food, and live entertainment. DVD Raffle for the Documentary Film "The Corporation" Our first fundraiser, a raffle for director-signed DVD copies of the Canadian award-winning documentary, The Corporation, exceeded our expectations and we thank everyone for their generous support. |
